The Samsung Renown for the Verizon Wireless network (see CNET Review or Official Samsung Product Page) is a flip-phone handset with just enough of the basic multimedia features to be a contender. Not everyone wants the latest and greatest flashiest features, though. Some people (gasp!) just want to use their mobile phone to make calls. Smile. If you're one of these people, the Samsung Renown might be for you.

• Outside Screen: 96 x 96 pixel resolution and 262,000 colors
• Main Screen: 2.25" TFT  LCD with 240 x 320 pixel resolution and 262,000 colors
• Memory: MicroSD - 15 MB on board
• Digital Camera: 2 megapixel (1600 x 1200 max resolution) - NO FLASH
  

If you don't take a lot of pictures (but still want to be able to get the occasional shot), the Samsung Renown is a perfect phone for you. It doesn't overwhelm you with features and doo dads (or a big price tag), but it does the basics well enough. The photos and call quality are a little better than the streaming video quality, but on a phone in this range that really isn't that surprising.

The phone supports all of Verizon's 3G network features for music, videos and more. Some of the music features are nifty, but as with everything else on the phone, it's pretty much just the basics that you get in the multimedia department.

Without a flash, though, the camera is decent only if you have great lighting. (Indoor pics might be a problem...) Again, though, with this phone it's kind of a given that the camera on the phone is not going to be terrific.
