Should You Hold Out for a Hero?

large1Love Apple or hate them, it can’t really be argued that in past years they have blown away competition in the high tech Mobile Phone market with the iPhone and its subsequent incarnations. Even technophiles who hate Apple usually ended up with an iPhone, because what else was there? With the launch of their latest Android phone, the Hero, HTC tries to offer a viable alternative. And in many ways, they succeed.

Sleek, but not too small, the sturdy Mobile Phone offers a myriad of features and options that allow you to access just about anything from the convenient location of your spare hand. The design is a little retro, but in an appealing way. A five megapixel camera makes you feel like you’re taking the next prized photo. Plenty of variety in widgets and apps allow for a completely customizable experience of social networking, internet, and email that’s hard to ignore. And if all of that wasn’t enough, the responsive multitouch display would be enough to seduce even the most skeptical customer.

HTC Hero Quick Stats:

  • Dimensions: 4.41” x 2.21” x .57”
  • Weight: 4.76 oz
  • Resolution: 320 x 480 pixels
  • Camera: 5 MP

Of course, there are inevitable pitfalls in this otherwise impressive Mobile Phone. Most notably is the fact that more often than not, performance speed suffers as it tries to support the variety of functions the Hero is performing. The 528MHz processor that’s recycled from previous models with its 288MB of RAM just isn’t enough to support the endless programs and often, the Hero can stall for several seconds while it tries to play catch up with your commands. Other complaints are smaller and less concerning – the lack of a flash for the camera, for example, is a small irritant in what could have been a standout feature.

As an overall package, the Hero offers a pretty impressive package. I’m just not sure it’s as impressive as HTC meant it to be. Leave a comment below and weigh in.
