Motorola Debut i856: Music To Your Ears
The Motorola Debut i856 is a push-to-talk phone that bucks the usual stereotypes. Slim and attractive, the sliding design is eye catching and easy to slip into your pocket without feeling weighed down. The outside is a standard mobile phone black and silver design, but the cheesier side of me loves the pop of red as you slide the phone open to access the keys.
Predictably, the display is less than stellar, with lousy resolution and not very many colors supported. The resulting graphics are a bit old school Nintendo for my taste, but at least they’re balanced out by a logical menu and easy to access features. The keys are another turn-off, though – while they’re certainly big enough to press easily, they’re squishy to the touch in an unpleasant way.
Motorola Debut i856 Quick Stats:
- Dimensions: 4.19 x 2.0 x .59
- Weight: 2.9 oz
- Resolution: 176 x 220
- Camera: 1.3 MP
There’s an unremarkable built-in camera and the requisite poor quality video recorder, but the music player makes up for both and then some. Equipped with several different 3D modes for the best listening experience from a mobile phone, the media player is straight forward and high quality. It organizes music according to artist, album, genres, and more. The easily accessible headphone jack on the side makes an overall listening experience as seamless and enjoyable as many higher end mp3 players on the market. Of course, the spell is broken when you have to access the microSD card irritatingly located behind the battery cover, but all things considered it’s a small sin.
Overall, the Debut is a mobile phone that offers exactly what it set out to – a decent media phone in a midrange price even if you don’t want a contract. Comment below to let me know if you agree.
