Samsung Instinct HD SPH-M850: Multimedia Comes at a Price
Always a standout among touchscreen mobile phones, the newest upgrade of the Samsung’s Instinct model offers a score of multimedia features that are quite eye-catching. Unfortunately, these features also come at a jaw-dropping cost that requires some closer examination.
Right away, you’ll notice that the Instinct HD is sleeker and more high tech than its predecessors. The color display is beautiful and the overall feel is a bit heftier in the palm, which in this case was exactly what the customer ordered. There are some design quirks – for example, while the phone offers a full QWERTY keyboard of reasonable size when vertical, the buttons aren’t in standard QWERTY formation. Luckily, simply orienting the phone horizontally fixes this problem and overall, use of the phone is seamless and logical.
Samsung Instinct HD SPH-M850 Quick Stats:
- Dimensions: 4.63” x 2.29” x .5”
- Weight: 4.01 oz
- Resolution: 480 x 320 pixels
- Camera: 5 MP
The feature really being pushed by Sprint is the 5 MP camera, which is certainly a novelty on a mobile phone. The quality is rather impressive, and it’s matched by a set of editing and customization options that were fun. What’s more, the Instinct HD also has the ability to record video in HD – thus the name. However, you can’t actually view the HD videos on the cameras – you’ll have to hook the mobile phone up to a TV for that. Still, it’s a unique feature.
Other bonus features have been added or tweaked as well, the most notable being the addition of wireless support which previous incarnations of the same model were sorely lacking. Still, it really seems that the price is padded because of a bunch of special features you don’t really need, when you can go ahead and get a comparable smartphone for less.
